There's no doubt that Liverpool enjoys a reputation as one of the most vibrant cities in the UK, and the variety of new homes in Merseyside currently available reflects its continued appeal to a wide range of homebuyers. Its reign as European City of Culture in 2008 and the designation of its dock area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has raised the city's profile in recent years and coincided with extensive regeneration of many long-neglected areas.

In Wallasey, on the Wirral Peninsula, Bovis Homes is currently offering homes with one to three bedrooms at Church Walk. One-bedroom apartments with allocated parking start at £74,995, though under the company's Jumpstart shared-equity scheme the buyer needs only to find £63,745 is payable on selected plots with the balance provided from Bovis Homes in the form of an interest free loan for the first five years. Two-bedroom apartments are priced from £89,995 and three-bedroom terraced houses make a great family home from £124,995. The Wirral has coast, parks and several golf courses within minutes of the front door, with the city centre just 10 minutes away through the Kingsway Tunnel.

Eight miles east of the centre of Liverpool is Montreal Gardens in North Huyton, a Gleeson Homes development of two-, three- and four-bedroom houses priced from £89,995, £112,995 and £159,995 respectively. The townhouses, terraces and detached homes will appeal to first time buyers, young professionals and families alike. There are shops at nearby Stockbridge Village and a host of schools including a new secondary academy within walking distance of the scheme. Gleeson Homes' Aspire and Advance assistance schemes are available on selected plots, with financial incentives for those buying their first home and needing to sell an existing property.

In nearby Knowsley is Princess Park, presented by HomesHub and Keepmoat Homes. HomesHub specialises in affordable new homes in Merseyside and Cheshire, with a host of schemes offering shared equity and part-buy/part-rent arrangements on brand new homes. Two- to four-bedroom properties at Princess Park are currently valued between £99,950 and £152,950.

Available under the government-funded Kickstart HomeBuy Direct scheme, the homes are available for a 70% to 80% share of ownership with the balance paid as subsidised rent. For example, the three-bedroom Clarenden house costs £119,950. Under the scheme, the buyer could buy a 75% share for £89,963, funded by a deposit and mortgage, and pay monthly rent of £68.72 on the balance.

HomeBuy Direct funds are also available on certain plots at Morris Homes' Waterside Village development in St Helens. Two-bedroom homes here start at £123,750 and three-bedroom properties at £149,750. Part exchange is also offered by the developer to buyers hoping to upgrade from their current home to a new property in St Helens.

Up the coast in Southport, Bellway Homes has a selection of three- and four-bedroom houses for sale from £159,995 to £329,995 at Hartley Grange, again with some plots available with part exchange on a current property or the Express Mover initiative where the housebuilder will help to market the buyer's existing property to achieve a sale. Southport's miles of coastline and numerous golf courses make it one of Merseyside's most cherished residential locations.

Countryside Properties is providing quite a different type of home at Mann Island, a striking black, wedge-shaped building at Pier Head in the heart of Liverpool's dock area. With 376 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for sale, it is the quintessential city waterfront development in a prime location in the city's regenerated hub. Reservations are being taken and show apartments are open with prices on application.
